This weekend, Yerevan, the capital of Armenia turned 2 808 years old. I hope this post gives you a taste of the unique, warm atmosphere of my hometown and makes you want to visit. I’m sharing some of my favorite places in the town with you.
- Matenadaran, The Museum of manuscripts
One of the places I would definitely include in a weekend in Yerevan (if it’s your first visit) is the Matenadaran, the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, located on one of the city’s scenic hills above Mashtots Avenue. Named after Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet in 405, the Matenadaran is home to one of the world’s largest collections of medieval manuscripts, with more than 17 000 manuscripts and over 100 000 archival documents. Its collection goes far beyond Armenian history, featuring manuscripts in Greek, Syriac, Latin, Arabic, Persian, Georgian, Hebrew and other languages, offering a fascinating glimpse into the centuries-old connections between Armenian culture and the wider Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and European worlds. Inside the museum’s exhibition halls, you can admire beautifully illuminated Gospels, medieval maps and atlases, historical chronicles, medical and philosophical treatises, scientific works and exquisite Armenian miniatures from different schools. I would recommend allowing around two hours for a visit and, if possible, taking a guided tour – Matenadaran has excellent guides in Armenian, English, Russian, French, German, Italian, making the experience much more engaging and meaningful.
Mesrop Mashtots Research Institute of Ancient Manuscripts is open from Tuesday to Saturday: 10:00-17:50
Address: Mashtots Avenue 53

2. Gata with coffee at Mayrig restaurant
Mayrig means “mother” in Armenian. At this restaurant, each dish feels like a memory preserved – a story passed down from mother to daughter and brought to life once again by the loving hands of Armenia’s mayrigs.
I highly recommend trying their pastries, especially the Gata, a traditional Armenian sweet bread made with a rich, sweet filling.

3. The Armenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre
For the cultural part of your weekend in Yerevan, a visit to the Armenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre is a must. Located in the heart of the city, this iconic theatre is not only one of Armenia’s most important cultural institutions but also an architectural masterpiece designed by the renowned Armenian architect and academician Alexander Tamanyan. The theatre opened its doors in 1933 and has played an important role in the development of Armenian opera and ballet ever since, introducing generations of audiences to both Armenian and international masterpieces. Today, the theatre continues to combine its rich artistic heritage with a diverse repertoire of opera and ballet performances. I recommend checking the programme in advance and booking your tickets online before your trip.

4. Tun Lahmajo
Probably one of the best places in Yerevan to try lahmajo – often referred to as Armenian pizza. The dish actually has Arabic origins, but it has become a beloved part of everyday food culture in Armenia and is perfect when you are looking for a quick and casual lunch. Tun Lahmajo is almost always busy with both locals and visitors, yet the quality remains consistently good. Along with the traditional lahmajo, I recommend trying tan, a refreshing fermented milk drink that pairs particularly well with it. And if you prefer something stronger, you will notice that many people order a beer here – Armenian beer is definitely worth trying too.

5. House-Museum of Martiros Saryan
For art lovers, the Martiros Saryan House-Museum is definitely worth adding to your Yerevan itinerary. Located in the centre of the city, the museum is dedicated to Martiros Saryan, one of Armenia’s most celebrated artists, whose vibrant paintings are deeply connected with the colours and landscapes of his homeland. The museum is located in the artist’s former home and studio, where he lived and worked for many years, making the visit feel particularly personal. The collection includes paintings from different periods of Saryan’s career, from landscapes and still lifes to portraits and works inspired by Armenian life. I especially love the vivid colours and the way his paintings capture the light and atmosphere of Armenia. Allow around an hour for the visit, it’s a lovely stop to combine with a walk around central Yerevan.

7. Dalan restaurant Abovyan 12
This list wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t include one of my favourite restaurants in Yerevan. For me, there is no better place than Dalan Abovyan 12, with its cosy, home-like atmosphere. The restaurant doesn’t have a large sign and is tucked away in a charming courtyard just off the bustling Abovyan Street. To reach it, you have to walk through the Dalan souvenir shop. Once inside, you will find a wonderfully green courtyard — a truly delightful place to sit and enjoy your meal.
The food is genuinely delicious and reasonably priced. It is one of those authentic, vibrant places that have witnessed the history of the city and simply don’t need any advertising. For instance, French President Emmanuel Macron dined here quite recently. An excellent choice!
I cannot recommend any specific dishes because, honestly, whatever you choose will be prepared to perfection — just like in an Armenian home. In summer, you can relax in the cosy courtyard under the shade of the trees, while in winter, you can sit inside and enjoy the atmosphere of a Yerevan apartment from a bygone era.

By the way, right next door you will find the Dalan Art Gallery. Founded in 2011, Dalan Art Gallery aims to represent artists from the post-Soviet and independence periods. Its collection features works by 26 contemporary artists, as well as works from Armenian private collectors, galleries and museums around the world. The gallery also presents solo and group exhibitions of contemporary art in different visual styles and new media.
So, if you are looking for a place where delicious Armenian food, art, history and the authentic atmosphere of Yerevan come together, Dalan Abovyan 12 is definitely worth adding to your itinerary.
