Just two hours by train from Paris, on the Normandy coast, Trouville-sur-Mer has long been one of the city’s favorite escapes from the summer heat. When the railway arrived in the 19th century, wealthy Parisians began flocking north in search of sea air, salt water and a little liberté. Soon, the coast was dotted with Belle Époque villas, grand hotels and casinos.
But while Deauville, just across the river, embraced a more polished version of seaside glamour – five-star hotels, designer boutiques and immaculate promenades – Trouville chose a different path.
Relaxed, bohemian and traditionally maritime, Trouville still likes to think of itself as Saint-Germain-des-Prés by the sea. There’s a faded elegance to its Belle Époque architecture, colorful fishing boats, market and wooden boardwalk, while the Normandy countryside unfolds around it in a lush swirl of greens and blues.
You don’t really come to Trouville to see and be seen. You come for the sea, the oysters, the long lunches and the pleasure of escaping Paris – without ever being too far from it.
Here are a few of the things I enjoyed on my last visit to Trouville. I already can’t wait to return and keep discovering the town – there is still so much left to explore.
One thing to keep in mind: the weather can be surprisingly chilly, even in spring, with strong winds and sudden rain showers. Pack accordingly – wool sweaters, jackets, a good raincoat and, of course, an umbrella are all essential.
1.Enjoying the classic French breakfast at the Hotel Flaubert, an exceptionally comfortable and charming boutique hotel with wonderful sea and city views.
2.Walking along the Trouville Beach, having a coffee on the terrace on the board walk.
3. Visit Casino Barrière Trouville for a glass of chilled champagne and to take photos.
4. Eating a hot fish soup at the historic Trouvill’s fish market, which is an absolutely must-visit.
5. Having seafood dinner at Bistrot Le Vivier . I love mussels in a wine sauce with cheese. They go perfectly with local cider.
6. And why not picnic on the beach with a sandwich and ice-cream?
